What search engines do Koreans mainly use?

I know that in the world, Korea has a perception that the Internet is well distributed and the speed is fast.

So, what kind of search engine do Koreans use when using the Internet? Today, I would like to introduce to you some Internet search engines that Koreans mainly use.

NAVER logo

1. Naver

It is the most used search engine by Koreans. In the past, the market share was so overwhelming that there was a saying, "If you don't know something, search it on Naver."

In the early 2000s, when the Internet search engine was inexperienced, Naver made great success through the 지식IN(Knowledge IN) service, where users answer their questions with collective intelligence when they pose their questions on the Internet. and with the success of webtoon and blog services, it achieved the first place in the fierce competition in the Korean search engine industry, and has maintained its undisputed number one position to this day.

However, Naver is currently losing a lot of market share to Google because its search reliability function has been greatly weakened due to various problems such as an overly closed operation policy, neglect of intellectuals and blog service management, and an increase in blogs with poor quality.

Nevertheless, Naver is still loved by Koreans because of its high convenience and usefulness, thanks to its Korean-friendly design and well-established systems useful in real life.

Daum had the upper hand until Naver ranked first in the search engine industry. Currently, it is the third largest search engine used by Koreans, behind Naver and Google.

Daum's free e-mail called "Hanmail" and Internet club service "Cafe" and webtoon wervice were successful, so they had the highest market share in the early days of the search engine indusrty.

However, for the above reasons, Daum gradually lost its market share to Naver, and also to Google. In the end, Daum was merged with Kakao in 2014, which operates "KakaoTalk," the representative mobile messenger most used by Koreans. Currently, KakaoTalk uses the Daum search engine.

It is my personal opinion, but daum has a stronger blogging service compared to Naver. This is because of the "brunch", a blog optimized for writing, and the "TISTORY" service that can link Google Adsense. the reason is as follows.

  • brunch : It is an Internet platform of great interest in the publishing industry. it is policy that only users who have passed the pass test can write, and the quality of writing is high. users who want to be writers are active in the brunch because users can receive publication offers from publishers if they write regularly.
  • TISTORY : Although it is not famous among the public because of the strong perception that "blog = Naver Blog", it is a blog service that can generate advertising revenue through Google Adsense. Adsense has an advantage in that blog users can earn high profits because the ad unit price is higher than the "adpost" supported by Naver. So users who run profit blogs are moving to TISTORY blogs.
As such, Daum's blog is getting stronger, but due to negligent cafe management, weak content and search service, the influx of people in their 20s and 30s does not occur, and exiting users are experiencing an aging problem.

Still, a significant number of Koreans in their 40s and 50s still use Daum Search and Hanmail, and Daum has a high symbolism in the Korea search engine industry to the extent that Koreans call the word "cafe" to refer to an Internet club.

3. So what about Google?

Google currently ranks second in market share. Until a few years ago, Google was not used often because of Naver, but Naver's monopoly system collapsed due to the increase in Google's recognition due to the spread of smartphones and the decrease in search reliability due to problems caused by Naver's closed operating policy.

I also have a habit of searching on Naver first if I come across something I don't know, and then on Google if I want to know more in detail.

Today, I have posted some of the most popular search engines used by Koreans. In my opinion, I expect Google to overtake Naver in the near future.

However, Naver service is not expected to be reversed at once because it is designed to suit Korean tasted and is easy to use.
