Interestingly, it is a new word, but there is a word that many Koreans think of as a standard language. It's the word '신박하다(sinbaghada')'. 'It's amazing and novel.' has a meaning.

The origin of the word is only a mall number of people who where active in the Internet community, so most Koreans are surprised to say, "This word was actually a new word."

How was this newly coined word that many Koreans perceive as a standard language? Today, I would like to tell you the origin of "신박하다(sinbaghada)"

1. The beginning of "신박하다"

New Korean words were created one by one as the Internet developed. and the release of the online game "Wordl of Warcraft(Wow)" made by Blizzard in Korea has had a tremendous impact, and big new words that Koreans still use in their daily lives have been Born.

The word "신박하다"that I'm going to talk about today was a term used by Korean users of World of Warcraft.

2. The reason is "Holy Paladin"

When you start this game, you have to create a character first. and must choose one of two factions, Alliance and Horde, choose a race, and choose a class. and as your character grows, You have to choose one of three unique traits that the class has.

The first letter of the word "신박하다(sinbaghada)" is "신(sin)", which means the divine attribute of the Paladin class of the Alliance camp. When translated into Korean expression, paladin is "성기사(seong-gisa)", and the divine attribute it translated as "신성(sinseong)".

WoW's system is programmed to fight when you find an opponent's faction during the game. In the opposing faction, the Horde, there are no paladins and they have tough vitality, making it difficult to even kill them, so they began to call them "바퀴벌래(cockroaches)"

3. The birth of "신박하다"

With the spread of WoW, numerous WoW communities have been created on the Korean Internet. a representative community was WoW Gallery(Community is called gallery), which was created in 'DC Inside', the progenitor of the Korean internet community. WoW gallery users tend to taboo the aforementioned paladin because there are many 'Horde' users, so they called them '바퀴벌래(bakwibeolle) → 바퀴(bakwi) → 박휘(baghwi)' as a slang term.

From then on, WoW gallery began to change the word "기(gi)" to "박(bak)". through this act, existing community user built friendships, distinguished new user, and discovered spies from other conflicting communities. here's how to change it:

  • Holy paladin, 신성 성기사(sinseong seong-gisa) = 신박(sinbag)
  • Protection paladin, 보호 성기사(boho seong-gisa) = 보박(bobag)
  • Retribution paladin, 징벌 성기사(Jingbeol seong-gisa) = 징박(jingbag)

As such, at first, it was a word used only by the community or users, but as the popularity of WoW grew, many people started using the terms used in WoW in their daily life. even Koreans who don't know WoW like the sound of the expression "신박하다", so they use this expression one by one. currently, this expression is often mentioned on TV programs or home shopping.

I will end today's post in the hope that it will be helpful for those of you who are studying Korea. Thank you for reading.
